Italy Day 9 - Part 1

One of Tammi and Scott's friends who had recently been to Italy told them that we should go see the Vatican on Wednesday because that is when the Pope comes out to speak. We got up early and we are our way by 9 a.m. We arrived down by the Vatican not knowing what to expect. As we were walking along the wall we could see thousands of people that had been congregating. When we turned the corner this is what we saw . . .. Much to our surprise the Pope was speaking. We were so excited.
It was hard to see him but they had big screens up so you could see him better.

Here is a panoramic view of Vatican City.

Carlos took the camera and somehow made it up closer to get a better picture.

After the Pope spoke we had a two hour wait before being able to go in the Basilica. Around 2 pm they began letting people in. We first went to the area that housed all the prior Popes in their graves. We were only able to get a few pictures. This is where they believe that Peter is buried.

A view looking out from the Vatican.

We then went into the Basilica. As you can see Scott was so excited to be there! :-)

This is a statue of Peter. As the people walk by they rub his feet. The lady was telling us that so many people have rubbed his feet that his toes are starting to disappear.

My husband "found" an English speaking tour that he kind of well "joined in to" :-)
She had no clue that Carlos was not in her group :-)

These are some of the guards that guard the Vatican.

We had a great time in Vatican City today. It was a special treat to see and hear the Pope.

It must be AMAZING to be in places so many of us have read about through all of our history studies!
