Italy Day 8 - Part 1

On Tuesday we woke up early and took the metro subway and the bus to the Catacombe's. There are around 60 different Catacombe's outside the city limit's of Rome. We ended up going to the San Callisto Catacombe. You may ask what are they . . .back when the Roman Empire ruled .. . Christian's were not allowed to be buried in the city limits so they went outside the city limits and buried them in what is called the Catacombe's. After the Roman Empire ended they continued to bury Christian's there but eventually they sealed it up and deserted them all. In the 1850's I believe the Catacombe's were discovered. In 1940's the first tourists were allowed to tour them. The one we visited today was spread out over 33 acres underground. There are four levels as low as 120 ft down.

This is Father Sampson . . .he was our tour guide.
He started out by explaining everything to use by using these drawings. There was no pictures allowed once underground so I asked him if i could take pictures of the pictures so you all could see what was below.

After the tour we went to get something to eat before heading back to Rome.

Once back in Rome we visited the most beautiful Basilica's (churches).

This one was amazing. They had HUGE sculptures of each of the 12 disciples.

This view helps you to see how Huge they are.
