Italy Day 7 Part 1

We left Monday morning for Rome. We headed to the train station to catch our ride.

After loading all our stuff in we finally got situated in our seats and relaxed for the 3 hour train trip to Rome. I think Scott was in the restroom when we took these pictures.
Upon arriving at Rome we had to catch a taxi to take us to our hotel.

The rooms were decorated modern European.

This is the first hotel I have ever stayed in the had hardwood floors in the room.
I love this sink!
After we unpacked we walked over to the Coleseum. It is breathtaking . . .you have to pinch yourself that you are really seeing what you are seeing. I can't remember the exact date that they completed this structure but I believe it was before Christ. I will have to go back into the blog and fill in the blanks later.

A big part of the structure is missing but you could really imagine what it was like when it was complete. The actual structure had 5 levels. The women and the poorest of poor had to sit on the very top on wood seats. As you went down to the different levels these were for men and and they sat on marble seats.

The floor is now gone but you can see that under the floor were all the spaces for cages for the animals used in the Gladiator fights.

It's hard to see in this picture but at the cross is where all the dignitaries would sit.
They have reconstructed part of the floor so you could imagine what it would be like . . .the floor would go all the way across. This is where the fights would be held.
They are still doing archelogical digs around the site.

Here are a few pictures I took looking from the Coleseum out.

It's hard to imagine how old everything here is.

A better look at the underneath.

A corridor.
Original steps leading up to the different levels.

I'm loving these photos since I recently read The Mark of the Lion series. Have you read it? If not, you should read it NOW while all of this is fresh in your mind!

Cindy - I have not read that series yet. I will check that series out next!

Robin - Rome is filled with so much history. It was so fun to see and touch things that were thousands of years old.

Carolyn - it truly was amazing!
